All Grown Up… But Not Quite

By Jackie Saulmon Ramirez | June 19, 2012

Have you ever googled your child’s name? A member once suggested this to our Parents Anonymous® group to see if our child’s information turned up anywhere it shouldn’t be. There was always the possibility the name would show up, but it wouldn’t be your child. I thought of my 15-year-old niece that lives in another state and plugged her name into Google for fun and— bingo! There was her Facebook page, her school’s news, her church’s bulletin, a twitter account, some of her artwork online and a page. I clicked on the MyYearbook page since I wasn’t familiar with it. There was a photo of my niece but the information was all wrong— saying she was 20, not 15, and lived in a town several miles from my brother’s address.

My discovery was accidental but shows you how much information is out there and anything we (or our kids) do online is easily found through Google. It also shows that my niece is a normal teenager with peer, growth and hormone issues with a hearty dose of risky behavior thrown in for good measure. I am uneasy about her saying she is older online because there are criminals who look for kids like her— naive and obviously pretending to be older. I’m not too concerned because my niece is a straight-A student and has close relationships with family and church members in her community. (I clicked on a friend of my niece that is also 15 and he claims to be 24 on MyYearbook!) My advice to my brother? Buckle your seatbelt buddy; it’s going to be a bumpy ride.
