My girls were cleaning the basement this week and sorting things to put out for a yard sale. I listened to Chelsey and Katie work together debating keep, sell or discard. I thought of all their arguments and fights and how upset and stressed out I would get when they were younger. Then I’d go to my Parents Anonymous meeting and talk about how hard it was to get them to clean their rooms or do some mundane little chore. The members would share ideas and encouragement which I gladly accepted. I’d get through one more week and feel much better about my situation.
And now as I look back, I realize that my every effort was worth it. I guess my message to you this week is that every technique you try and every book you read is all worth it; because our kids are worth it. So don’t ever give up; not on your child and improving yourself as a parent. Both you and they are a work in progress so approach it that way. What doesn’t work today just may click tomorrow.
Important Tip-Keep a copy of your child’s health records – mainly immunizations – it will be important throughout their lives: going to school, college, travel abroad, etc. In hindsight it is also helpful to keep a log of illnesses and conditions throughout your children’s lives: influenza, asthma, viruses, etc. This week I’ve added resources to help with documenting immunizations. I learned the hard way when the girls went off to college; we had moved four times and had six pediatricians before we bought our house and the previous doctors did not want to be bothered looking through records. Getting the documentation now while you are not pushed by a deadline will make it so much less stressful.
